Why This Book has Value: This book doesn't really capture any time or place in human history because it take place in a fictional world. The topic that this book has is that the main cast of characters are stranded on an island and must survive and wait for rescue. The big catch is that as time progresses, the hunters and eventually most of the others have transformed into savages by their inner beast. The real world connection is that Golding believes that every man has a innate evil inside of them that can be awakened. I can't really tell the importance of the author and his development as a writer. The vocabulary of "Lord of the Flies" isn't very advanced; most of it is everyday words with a few more advanced ones mixed in. There was actually quite a bit of character development over the book, but to me it felt like that was only on the main characters. The side characters that would be introduced every now and then felt like they were on a tree that didn't have any branches, they just stayed the same without going into new things or learning, like they weren't branching out at all. The theme stayed the same for about two thirds of the book, which was having the fire so they could be rescued, then it started focusing on something else, which was the new group that Jack started. I myself found the plot of the story not very interesting. I suppose it is because I have read a couple things along the same lines and it just got old because it felt like I was reading the same thing over and over, but on the other hand I can see how some people could be very interested in the plot. I can't see how it would build on other texts except maybe Golding got the inspiration from something else he had read or seen. I think this book would be targeted towards people in the late teens early adult age group, if it was targeted towards any audience at all.

I think that you could of used some more quotation's from your book to help support your thoughts more.
ReplyDelete"The real world connection is that Golding believes that every man has a innate evil inside of them that can be awakened." I love that. It's just an idea that would keep me up at night and makes me want to read the book.
ReplyDeleteI think that you had some interesting points about the book. Your simile about the side characters being like a tree without branches made me pause and think. Do you think that the book would have been better if the side characters were developed more? I personally liked the Lord of the Flies and I think it is a very insightful book that delves into the depths of the human behavior.
