Hunger Games: Mockingjay( Mady Heining)

Title of Book: Hunger Games: Mockingjay
 Author: Suzanne Collins
 # of Pages: 390
 Star Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆

Hunger Games: Mockingjay trilogy is one of two other books that have been written in the series. A boy named Peeta Mellark and a girl named Katniss Everdeen lived in District 12 and were reaped into the Hunger Games. In the first book they fell in love with each other and were both going to die together in the aren,  but were stopped by the capitol. They were the Victor's. In the Second book,  all previous Victors were to be reaped and so Katniss and Peeta had to go into the games for a second time. This time was different though, Katniss destroyed the arena and Peeta was captured by the Capitol. In the Mockingjay, Katniss has been taken by District 13 because they want her to be the face of the rebellion, or the Mockingjay as they call it. Katniss makes a deal with the head of District 13... she will be the Mockingjay as long as they rescue Peeta. In this book, not only does  Katniss have to deal with a lot of pain and anger, but she has to try and face the fact that Peeta might never be the same after what the Capitol did to him.

This book has a very specific setting that takes place in the future. The human race is being controlled by the Capitol. As you read throughout all of the books, only the most rich live in the Capitol and they are the ones who are treated the best. Everyone else lives in one the of thirteen districts.  Most people that live in these districts are very poor, and do not have very good living conditions. The Hunger Games was a way to control the people and make them fear the president. In the Mockingjay book, the Districts are starting to rebel and Katniss is the face of that rebellion because she hates the Capitol the most. In the book Katniss says " Of course, I hate the capitol, but I have no confidence that my being the Mockingjay will benefit those who are trying to bring it down." page 12. Katniss has so much hatred for President Snow and the Capitol, that she wants to try and bring it down, but she doesn't have  faith that she can be the one to knock it down. As you read the book, it will kind of give you an idea of what the world will maybe be like in the future.

One of the main reason's why I think the Hunger Games series is so popular, is because of the characters that people grow to love. Katniss and Peeta have drawn closer and closer with each other since the first Hunger games . Since the only reason both of them survived the first Hunger games was because they were threatening to both die together, they have had to prove to people that they are still in love. They have to act for the cameras all the time but they never really talk much with each other off camera. People are beginning to doubt that they are in love, but once they went into the second games, everyone saw how much they really cared about each other and loved each other. In the Mockingjay, Katniss can't bear the fact that Peeta is in  the the Capitol being tortured. Katniss says " And in my heart of hearts, I know we both failed." Now you say it". I tell him." I can't believe you let him out of your sight that night" says Haymitch. I nod" That's it" I play it over and over in my head. What I could have done to keep Peeta by my side without breaking the alliance. But nothing comes to me."Page 77.  In this book she starts to truly appreciate every little thing that Peeta ever did for her. When they rescue Peeta, Snow has brainwashed him to want to kill Katniss. There relationship takes a turn in this book, but it's addicting to want to know what happens in their relationship in the end.

Throughout the book you can start to see that Peeta is recovering, but at a very slow rate. In the book he says " I just murdered a member of our squad... I've never seen myself like that before. Katniss is right. I'm the one Snow has turned into a weapon"Page . Here, he  comes to the realization that Snow has done this to him and that he is dangerous. Although he is not the sweet and admirable guy  he once was to Katniss, there is a point in the book where things change for him and Katniss. In the book it describes it like this....“Peeta shakes his head. “I’m losing it. I’ll go mad. Like them.”
Like the mutts. Like a rabid beast bent on ripping my throat out. And here, finally here in this place, in these circumstances, I will really have to kill him. And Snow will win. Hot, bitter hatred courses through me. Snow has won too much already today.
It’s a long shot, it’s suicide maybe, but I do the only thing I can think of. I lean in and kiss Peeta full on the mouth. His whole body starts shuddering, but I keep my lips pressed to his until I have to come up for air. My hands slide up his wrists to clasp his. “Don’t let him take you from me … Stay with me.”
His pupils contract to pinpoints, dilate again rapidly, and then return to something resembling normalcy.
“Always,” he murmurs.

The subject and the theme of this whole series has been really popular and has caught the attention of so many readers. It shows how one person, Katniss Everdeen, has changed the whole ball game of how society runs. In the book it says " I was their Mockingjay long before I accepted the role".Page 90.  From the first moment that Katniss wasn't gonna let Peeta die and they were both going to eat the poison berries, the people knew that she was going to change everything from that moment on. She hated the fact that the Capitol was putting people into an arena to kill each other. She stood up for what she believed in and changed everything. She didn't try and put on an act for anyone,  she was just herself, which is why everyone loves her so much. Also, the fact that her and Peeta's relationship is apart of this story makes it 10 times better. I think everyone loves the idea of an underdog. This book shows how no matter how hard it can all be, if you have enough strength and courage, you can actually end up winning. President Snow tried to take everything from her, but she's not going to let that happen, she is going to prove him and the Capitol wrong. President Snow created Peeta to be the one to destroy Katniss, but he actually ended up being the one who saved her. The theme of this book is that if you try your hardest and do what is right, things will turn out for you in the end. The people who had been treated like dirt for so many years, finally stood up against the capitol and fought back, and Katniss is the one to thank for that.

  1. I like that the books show that it only takes one person to make huge changes. It is true in real life too, that if you try to change something other will see those changes and follow you. I haven't read the books, but the movies were good.
