Why This Book Has Value:
The Fault In Our Stars by John Green is ordinary love story with small twists and moments that make it an exceptional learning experience for any reader.
We start off meeting a 17 year old girl named Hazel Grace Lancaster who has been living with the struggles of cancer basically her entire life. We quickly learn that Hazel is living a very secure life, staying inside reading books and not experiencing what the world truly has to offer. But then one day she goes to her Cancer Support Group and she encounters a boy named Augustus Waters, and little did she know, but he would rewrite her entire story.
She learns immediately that he is going to challenge her comfort zone and that is thrilling to her so they quickly become friends and they share their stories to one another. Augustus had cancer when he was younger and he had lost his lower leg because of it, but he claimed he was fine now. Hazel shared that her favorite book was An Imperial Affliction, which she had read over and over again and Augustus decided he would read the book to see what all the hype was about and he fell in love with it.
Both of them wanted to meet the author Peter Van Houten, so they flew to Amsterdam on Augustus’ “dying wish”. This is when the two admitted their love for each other. It was a beautiful moment in the book that taught me so much about life.
I think there are a few things that make this book so important and so relevant. I think the most important thing I learned is to never take anything for granted and to live in the moment because we have no idea what the future will bring. For both of them they had no idea of their cancer who arise again or get worse so they had to live in the moment because that moment could have been the only thing they had left. I also think something I learned is to be happy with where you are. These two souls showed me that it’s so true you don't always get what you want, so you just have to make the best of what you do have. At the end of the day, there is always someone out there who has it worse than you and that is such an important lesson to learn. It also teaches you about values and morals in relationships. In today's society, things have gotten so twisted from what they should be. It should not be about sex, which is what society is teaching young minds. It should be about making the other person happy and loving them through everything. The last important factor this book has reminded me of, is all you need is love. I think we were put on this Earth to love and too many people lose sight of that today. Love should be a priority and it should be something so special that once you have a hold of it you never let it go. Let someone rewrite your story.

First of all, I would like to just express how much I LOVE this book. I read it last summer and it's one of my favorite books, if not my favorite. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. I think you did a great job with this analysis and I agree with all of your points. A love story no longer seems to be about the beauty of falling in love, but rather the physical aspect of it. Every magazine claims this, and we even have at least two television shows (The Bachelor and Bachelorette) that claim falling in love is simply based on the physicality or convenience. This is what makes this book so special, in my opinion. Hazel and Augustus fall deeply in love with each other despite feeling doomed to death or confinement in their own homes because of their illness. The love they share is also beautiful and gives readers a glimpse of the love we all so desire. Your final line was BRILLIANT! Great analysis!
ReplyDeleteI have never read this book but I plan on doing so this summer. You are so right - we never know what day will be our last so we should appreciate what we have and the people that love us. Falling in love while dealing with cancer would have to be a challenge! No one would really be at their best, but finding someone that accepts you as you are would have to leave a person with such a special feeling. You have written a great blog that has really given me an interest in reading this novel!
